Sermon: The Truth in God's Word

God's Word demands to be believed. When the Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, then it is either true, or it is not. There's no neutral ground. Either God's Word is the beginning of knowledge, both for believers and unbelievers, or else man's own knowledge determines what is true.

This is a question of authority. Is God's Word or man's word our highest authority?

God's Word is not true because we say it is; it is true because God's Word itself says it is.

Sermon: Everyone Knows God

Christians have by God's grace been brought to repentance from sin, and have been given the gift of faith to believe in God's Son, Jesus Christ to live in His truth.
But one also knows God before one comes to faith. It is not as though God did not exist until one all of a sudden one day come to believe in Him. No, one knew God, but suppressed Him.

God is not unknown to people. Knowledge of God is obvious. And it is not "God" as an unidentified entity everyone knows. It is God as He has plainly reviled himself everyone knows. Yet people suppress the truth. It is the living God that everyone knows; but we must all come to faith in Him.

Romans 1:16-32.

Sermon: Taking God's Grace for Granted

When injustice is done toward us by other people, we know that God will vindicate us some day. But when we see calamity befall other people, let us not point our finger at them and claim that they are the worst of sinners, nor dare to claim that God is unjust. Let us search our own hearts and repent. Let us never take God’s grace for granted.

Sermon: Be Reasonable

From 1. Cor. 1:20-25 and 3:18-19 it’s easy to get the impression that God is opposed to human reason. Paul is however not saying that human knowledge is in and of itself worthless. In fact, Paul was one of his time’s most highly educated people. He’s saying that “the wisdom of this world” is foolishness. It’s the kind of wisdom that claims that it can do on its own, independent of God and His revelation that is folly with God. And this worldly wisdom that keeps God and His revealed word, the Bible, completely out ends up in a perverted perception of reality.
We were designed by a reasoning God to be reasoning people. It is in our best interests to use that reason to test the competing truth claims that daily confront us.

Sermon: God's "Smitey" Hand

Download the sermon here mp3 (right click on the link and select "save file as...")

In 1. Samuel 15:1-3 God gives Saul orders to destroy the Amalekites.
How can such destruction be justified?
How is it possible for God to command such a massacre?
How can He kill innocent people like children and little babies?
Why does God order the Israelites to destroy the Amalekites instead of doing it Himself?
Why is there so much evil in the world? Why doesn't God do anything about it? How can He tolerate it? Why doesn't He destroy it?
Why do so many terrible things happen to innocent people?
Who do bad things happen to good people?
What is the solution to evil?
Do all your problems go away if you are a Christian?

In the course of half an hour, this sermon deals with these questions in light of God's Word and the Gospel.

(The word "Smitey" used in the title is a wordplay on Mighty and to Smite.)
